This is an old School Assignment I did.

We had 3 topics to write about, one was prejudice, one was friendship, I don't remember the 3rd choice, but I was the only person to choose prejudice in my class.

My English teacher said she almost wanted to slash her wrists after reading it...

"Prejudice is" is a simple yet very direct poem. It almost contains echoes of the Harlem Renaissance poetry in its rhythmic repetition, as well as with the few instances of slant rhyme.

The writing goes straight to the heart of the matter; this is what prejudice is. The only line that deviates from this pattern is the second one, "Prejudice is not to understand"; by stating in this line what prejudice "is not", I almost feel as though this line would have more impact opening the poem before launching into all the descriptions on what prejudice is. This may be a more aesthetic choice as well, as the poem is both visually and verbally smooth as it transitions from the lines that read "prejudice is a" to "prejudice is the".

Easy five stars for vision and impact; that should be a no-brainer to anyone who reads "Prejudice is". Overall a beautifully haunting poem that will stay with the reader.
